I met Alex at last year’s Weston Price conference in San Jose.  Super nice guy.  He’s also a fellow real food advocate which makes him an even better guy. 

So some of you might be wondering how a book about fermentation could be more potent than antacids and acid-blockers (which admittedly work quickly and effectively).

It’s very simple.

It’s because fermented foods are an important part of stopping heartburn and establishing good long-term digestive health.

Antacids like Tums and Rolaids and acid-blockers like Prilosec, Zantac and Nexium stop the symptoms of heartburn but not the cause.  They can make you dependent upon them AND often set up a whole cascade of other problems including nutrient deficiencies, bone loss and other digestive issues.

Fermented foods are one of the five real food pillars I discuss in my book.   But Alex’s book is much more extensive and specific to home fermentation. It’s also chock full of beautiful photos and simple instructions for:

  • vegetables including sauerkraut, pickles and kimchi
  • dairy including yogurt, kefir, creme fraiche and butter
  • fruits condiments including chutnies and pico de gallo

What I personally love about this book is the simplicity.  It’s great for beginners but can also add to the repertoire of those more experienced with home fermentation.  Oh and the pictures really are phenomenal.  And practical!  If you’re a visual learner the step-by-step photos will be a tremendous help.
